Affiliate Marketing in China

Written by / Posted in affiliate / 15 Comments

I am working with a company and at the moment am helping them to monetize some of their visitors from China and India. My initial instinct on this was, waste of traffic, there is no money in this.

Then I was at the Range Rover repair shop getting my wife’s car fixed, and I remembered that Rage Rover was now owned by a company in India. I also know my country is in debt to China to a point where they could call it a day for us at any time.

There are a lot of poor people in China and in India. With the shift of the worlds assets during the past 2 years, there are also a lot of poor Americans. It is a new world order, and to consider all Chinese and Indians and poor is a bad, bad mistake.

In fact two months ago I was contacted by a very nice guy in Katmandu, at the base of the Himalayas, Dali Lama country. My jaw dropped to my knees when I told him my hourly rate for consulting for the type of work he neeeded was $250 per hour, and he paid without hesitating.

Affiliate marketing in this part of the world is just getting started, but last time I was in Vegas it was the Chinese that were paying the big money gambling and eating at Wing Lei at the Wynn. Just look inside any of the high limit rooms in Vegas, and see who’s playing.

With clicks on Facebook in the U.S. costing around a buck each, and traffic from China getting around $0.001 per click, do you think there might be a market imbalance?

If you are in the game monetizing Chinese or Indian traffic, let me know, maybe we can work together. Maybe it is time for me to get to work on my Mandarin.

Wait! This isnt Aaron from Azoogle!

I agree with you. China and India can help in getting some affiliate marketing in. The thing is wether it’s worth the time. I have tried a promotion in India and find my self at just breaking even or barely making a profit. Such as putting $10 in a promotion and getting $12 back. And that’s over a month period of time at times. And with all the tax forms you have to keep track of in the United States as far as profits and investments if you have a lot of things going on it could be a waste of time. Depends on the type of product I guess.

You’re absolutely right. Ask an American what China means and they still think of rice paddies, rambo, cheap toys, and Chairman mao. But flip through a slideshow of recent cities in China and your drawer will drop. The US industrialized and commercialized over about 200 years from 1800 to 2000. China is doing it in 20, and they’re doing it better.

Great post DK! There are a lot of challenges to marketing internationally, but also tremendous potential. There are great opportunities for affiliate marketers who are willing to take on the various hurdles (language barriers, different customs and consumer behavior patterns, etc.).

Wow such an interesting perception of the shift in money over the years. I agree there are tons of people we Americans typically stereotyped into as a poor country with people rising up well over the American income. More and more countries are becoming sophisticated and a great resource for affiliate marketers.

dk, we should definately talk at Pubcon about this. I grew up in Hong Kong and opened an office there in 2007.

Both countries have over a billion people, so while there really is a ton of poor people there is also a ton of rich ones too.

Instead of investing in sanitation etc. India has built a super-fast information superhighway to encourage investment into the country. Mobile is all the rage there and in China.

But most US (and UK for that matter) businesses would fall at the first hurdle because they don’t get the way things work over there. It’s not the language that would let them down it’s the cultural differences, and these are huge.

I wonder how, with the countries being so poor, that people from India and china are able to afford paying higher prices for consulting than perhaps you could get here, in the U.S.? It is probably related to the balance of power in those countries – those who have – travel, go to the U.S., spread their wealth on the gambling tables, etc., while others in their countries starve. Will spreading affiliates internationally benefit all in a country?

You should never assume that someone has certain financial assets, skills, ideas, abilities, or connections. Likewise, you should never take for granted that someone does NOT have them. Explore each opportunity as just that — an opportunity, and don’t second-guess how much to invest in it until you’ve given the first guess (which rarely requires much investment, even of time) a shot.

@The FrogPrince&Family. I think that’s a great point. People’s skills are more and more hidden in this world, and the guy sipping coffee next to you could be a multi-millionaire writer or inventor or internet marketer. That applies even more so for people who fit old stereotypes. There are fewer barriers to success these days and even more paths to it. Similar rules may apply, but the appearances of the winners and losers is changing quickly.

The problem in the USA is that marketing is taking the customers for granted. They know they will get clicks on Facebook no matter what but now that China is emerging as the next world superpower its citizens are becoming hungry for everything we have over here but they have the advantage of setting such things up with the hindsight of the mistakes that were made over here.

Learn relationship-building and communication strategies to improve your effectiveness with Chinese counterparts. Effective management practices and business communication are covered for working face to face or virtually with Chinese in meetings and negotiations. Avoid offending them by understanding their cultural values, country background, sources of pride and sensitivity, and appropriate business entertainment etiquette. This course also provides excellent preparation for business trips and hosting Chinese.

Amen! Over here in the West, we can be pretty ignorant as to what’s going on in the rest of the world. Most Americans have no idea what the financial balance is in the world today.

It is ridiculous how poor our economy is. Honestly, I am not one to really get “in-depth” with our country’s financial standing, but it was definitely interesting to read this point of view.
